Sonoma County is simply one of the best places for a relaxing California getaway. You’ll be able to experience the beautiful sunshine, delicious food, and unique attractions of Wine Country. This area is especially wonderful if you’re a nature lover, and the fall season brings the environment to life with breathtaking colors. Taking a hike in Wine Country is one of the best ways to get active and become one with nature. Here are three of our favorite fall hikes in Sonoma County, all located just minutes from our Wine Country vacation homes.
Sonoma Overlook Trail, Sonoma
Sonoma Overlook Trail is a short trek for beginners and experienced hikers alike. This 3-mile hike offers a gorgeous view of Sonoma Valley, and you can gaze upon the native plants and wildlife along the way. You can opt to take the hike by yourself, or if you’re visiting on the weekend, you can take part in a docent-led hike. You will begin at Toyon Road within the Mountain Cemetery, just north of the Sonoma Plaza. Once you get to the top, you’ll experience unbelievable views of the Sonoma Valley and the Bay Area.
The entrance to the Sonoma Overlook Trail is located at 198 1st Street West. The trail is open during daylight hours, but if you visit later in the year, be aware that the lower portion is closed in the winter. Bikes and dogs are not permitted.
Bodega Head, Bodega Bay
Bodega Head offers one of the most gorgeous views of the Pacific that you can find. It’s a bit off the beaten path, so you won’t be fighting the crowds and will instead be able to enjoy an unmatched view of the wildlife and water. Bodega Head is about 4 miles long, and there are plenty of stops along the way.
Journey to the top of the Bodega Head Bluffs and take advantage of the free parking, then follow the trail that takes you around the southern side of the peninsula. This mile-long loop will give you a great view of the water, and depending on when you visit, you might be able to spot wildlife like seals and whales! For a longer journey, take the three-mile Overlook Trail starting from the north end of the parking lot, where you can find the beach, dunes, and another overlook.
There are many restaurants and attractions in Bodega Head, so do a little more research before you visit if you want to spend the whole day here. Be aware that dogs are not allowed on the trail.
Spring Lake Regional Park, Santa Rosa
Spring Lake Regional Park is one of the most popular parks in Sonoma County, attracting visitors and locals alike all year long. Spring Lake offers almost 10 miles of trails, perfect for every skill level. The main trail is just 2.3 miles, and it is paved and mostly flat for an easy experience. You can also find unpaved trails that are better for solitary journeys. No matter which trail you embark on, you will find incredible views of the forested hillsides and the beautiful swimming lagoon.
Spring Lake Regional Park is located at 393 Violetti Road. Parking is $7, and the park is open daily from 7 a.m. until sunset.
All three of these locations offer tons of fun, and hiking here is one of the best ways to view all the beauty of Sonoma County.
